Essential Tips for Capturing Stunning Low-Light Photos

Some of the most breathtaking sights unfold at sunset, during the twilight hours, or in the stillness of dawn — but capturing these magical moments can be tricky when there's limited light available. Advanced compact and mirrorless cameras from Canon are perfect for the job. Their low light performance lets you capture detailed and sharp photos you can’t achieve easily with your smartphone.

It can be tempting to simply shoot in auto mode to get the shot quickly, but when you do this, you may not be able to fully utilise the capabilities of your Canon lenses. You might even end up with grainy or blurry photos.

How do you make the most of your camera and Canon lenses and capture sharp, detailed images? This blog post will share some valuable tips to help you capture stunning images in low-light conditions.

Use a low f-number or a wide aperture.

To capture clear images in low-light conditions, use a wide aperture (represented by a low f-number). This allows more light to enter the lens and enables faster shutter speeds without significantly increasing the ISO setting. It also helps reduce noise and maintain image quality.

For example, a Canon EOS R6 paired with an RF 24mm F1.8 Macro IS STM lens can capture sharp details and action even in low light.

When using manual settings, the Av (aperture priority) mode allows the camera to automatically adjust the shutter speed based on the chosen aperture to ensure proper exposure. Is the image still too dark (underexposed)? You can increase the exposure further by slowing down the shutter speed, but to do this, you need a stable camera to prevent motion blur. Use a tripod in such situations.

Improve light sensitivity by raising the ISO setting.

Sometimes, you might not capture enough light even with a wide aperture. In such cases, you can try increasing the sensor’s ISO sensitivity, especially if you’re shooting with Canon lenses at night without using flash.

Canon's advanced compact and mirrorless cameras have larger sensors that allow them to produce significantly better high-ISO photos than smartphones. The EOS R6 Mark II and EOS R8 can capture stunning low-light images with minimal grain or noise. Even APS-C cameras like the EOS R50 and R10, despite their smaller size, deliver detailed, low-noise photos at high ISO settings for handheld shooting at night.

Maximise white balance settings

Canon cameras have an accurate auto white balance, but you can also experiment with alternative presets to add more character and style to your low-light photos. For instance, you can try using Tungsten white balance when shooting city lights at sunset or using Daylight if you want the warm artificial lighting to stand out.
